Chiropractic Care

Brain-spine connection.

Before we talk about Chiropractic care, it is important to understand what the main role of our spine is and where it has connections to.

The brain is connected to the rest of our body via the spinal cord. Attached to the spinal cord are the nerves that feed our organs and muscles. Without the spinal cord and these attachments, we would have no movement to our extremities or function to our organs. These nerves exit the cord through our vertebrae. It is the spines role to house and protect our very delicate, yet powerful nervous system. That is why it is so important to have the spine checked and cleared of misalignments. See the picture below of the relationship between our nervous system and organ systems.

What is a subluxation?

A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that is putting pressure on surrounding structures, causing an imbalance of nerve flow. The symptoms are commonly pain and swelling however, as you can see from the picture above, many other systems may be affected. In fact, many patients notice improvements in areas other than their reason for treatment for this very reason. A lot of times patients will say they have noticed improved digestion, blood pressure, increased overall immunity, and of course, less pain. A subluxation means the nervous system's impulse is disrupted and the brain and body are no longer able to effectively communicate. Subluxations cause altered function of motor control, digestion, immunity, and even behavior and emotional health.

What is an adjustment?

An adjustment is when a Chiropractor uses a very gentle, specific force to a bone to correct a subluxation. When a bone is adjusted, often times the patient will hear a cavitation or “pop” in the joint. This is the release of gas that is built up in the joint. Most patients describe an adjustment as a feeling of relief, however it is not uncommon to encounter some tenderness during or after the treatment.

Ultimately it is the adjustment that clears the nervous system from imbalance. Chiropractic care addresses the root cause of the symptoms you are noticing instead of masking them with medications and toxins. There for, results are longer lasting, more effective, and much more safe then adding a mix of chemicals to your system. Pain is the bodies way of letting us know a system is not working correctly, disrupting the pain communication to the brain can cause more damage than addressing the problem in the first place.
